Day-long adventures on a single tank of gas


Looking for a getaway on the long, hot summer days? Here are eight road trips that only use one tank of gas in the greater Baton Rouge area.


Louisiana’s oldest city is also one of the most interesting to visit.

Natchitoches, the original French colony in Louisiana, is Louisiana’s oldest purchase colony.

Be sure to grab a meat pie to fuel the adventure, as there is a lot to see in the Historic District.

The Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District is made up of 33 blocks of historic buildings dating to the late 1700s.

Travel time is approximately three and a half hours north on Interstate 49.

Big island

A trip south leads to Grand Isle, located along the Gulf of Mexico.

The area is known for its beach, state park, trails, campgrounds, fishing, and bird watching.

Driving time is two and a half hours south on the highway. 1.

Biloxi Lighthouse • Biloxi, Mississippi • This cast iron lighthouse on the Mississippi Sound of the Gulf of Mexico has weathered storms for over 170 years and has become a symbol of the region's resilience.

Whether you’re on the beach or feeling lucky, Biloxi has something for everyone.

Biloxi is home to several casino complexes and outdoor activities.

Located along the Mississippi coast, the city offers many cultural attractions, such as the 64-foot Biloxi Lighthouse.

Beaumont, Texas

Beaumont, Texas

Just across the border from Louisiana to Texas is Beaumont.

The Southeast Texas city is home to the Spindletop / Gladys City Boomtown Museum, the Texas Energy Museum, and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas.

The Cattail Marsh is a popular spot for bird watchers.

The trip takes over three hours west on Interstate 10.

First colonized by the French, Natchez is the oldest city established along the Mississippi River.

Historic Natchez is nestled on the cliffs of the Mississippi River.

Natchez is full of historical sites, museums, outdoor recreation and cultural offerings.

Among the attractions is the Delta Music Museum, which celebrates the rock and blues pioneers of the Delta region.

Travel time is approximately two hours north on US 61.

With nearly 6,500 acres of protected land, 28 miles of paved and improved trails, and nearly three miles of waterfront, Gulf State Park is one of those state parks that feels like it could easily be a national park instead.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

This one can be a stretch for your gas tank, depending on the vehicle you are driving. Nonetheless, a trip to the Alabama coast is worth considering.

Those feeling more adventurous could go a few extra miles and cross the Florida Line into the Pensacola area, famous for its emerald beaches.

Gulf Shores and neighboring Orange Beach offer “miles of pristine white quartz sand lapped by the blue-green waters of the Gulf,” according to the Beaches website.

Travel time is four hours east on Interstate 10.

Homochitto National Forest

The Homochitto National Forest is an American national forest located in the southwestern Mississippi.

At nearly 192,000 acres, the forest includes many streams and trails.

The Clear Springs Recreation Area includes a man-made lake, campground, picnic areas, swimming area, and two hiking trails.

Travel time is just over two hours north on US 61.

Nearly 200 runners and cyclists took part in the 9th Wild Azalea Trail Challenge held in the Evangeline Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest on Saturday, January 2, 2021. The Wild Azalea Trail is Louisiana's longest continuous trail at 26 miles.  Runners and cyclists competed in one of five categories: 13.1 miles, 27 miles or 50 miles for runners and 27 or 50 miles for cyclists.

Kisatchie National Forest

Louisiana’s only national forest is located in the wooded hills of parishes in the central and northern part of the state.

Kisatchie includes over 600,000 acres of outdoor adventure. The forest offers over 40 landscaped recreation sites and over 100 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
