Chin, Chin is the travel guides
Travel is back, and so are Australia’s favorite travel reviews on Channel 9 travel guides.
It’s one of the most unique and honest TV shows with all five groups of reviewers visiting the same place for the same vacation week, reviewing food, accommodation, activities and sights. .
On a recent visit to Perth get started sitting with Kevin and Janetta, a posh retired couple.
Before retiring, the couple both had careers in the travel industry, which inspired them to apply for the show’s first series in 2015.
Kevin and Janetta said one of the show’s successes is that they’re allowed to say exactly what they think about every place they visit.
“We have incredible appeal with the product because we’re so honest. A lot of people tell us that they decide their vacation based on what we do,” the couple said.
Renowned for hating camping and often referred to as the series’ travel snobs, Kevin and Janetta use three criteria to judge: accommodations, destination, and experiences.
“Accommodation is the most important part of a holiday for us, we love nice digs, anything with sand around it like a tent, we hate it.”
Seen in nearly every episode with a glass of wine and a toast with a “chin, chin,” the couple said it became their catchphrase.
On their trips for the show, they arrive at the airport not knowing where they are going. They receive a packing list and temperature guide for clothes before leaving.
“travel guides took us to do things we normally would never have considered including bungee jumping in New Zealand, ziplining over a canyon in Hawaii and a helicopter ride over a volcano asset.
Doing things outside of their comfort zone makes them enjoy traveling more.
“One of the things we’ve had to deal with is that we have no control over where we go and what we do.
“We could camp in a tent on Fraser Island or stay in a $2,000-a-night palace in India.”
The couple say that when you get a little older, you crave comfort.
Kevin said his favorite trip was the Danube river cruise and that Janetta really enjoyed visiting Israel and Sri Lanka. Their favorite travel experience is cruising, the couple have taken over 30 cruises.
I asked them for their top travel tips…
“Don’t let age stop you from doing things; enjoy every moment even if things go pear-shaped, just roll with the punches.
“Don’t be afraid to use your senior card anywhere in the world. Get these discounts.
“If you visit a place where they drive across the road and you’ve never done it before, don’t.
“Don’t go cheap on accommodation if you can afford it – it’s worth spending the extra money for a nice room.”
The warm and friendly couple believe that as you get older your travel life is over, so enjoy the experience travel can bring.
